Human Factors

Several projects are underway to investigate the effect of roadway design on driver behavior. The projects are funded by Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) and the Local Road Research Board through the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Minnesota. The projects can be viewed as a pilot testing of the use of the University's driving simulator as part of the MNDOT design process. Potentially, the simulator helps the design team visualize the project and communicate more effectively about the design. It then allows them to test design options and make more informed design decisions. In turn, the process benefits University researchers by refining methods and tools to address MNDOT problems. Finally, if the construction is followed by field testing, both MNDOT and the University will be able to use this feedback to improve the research and design process.
