Staff Biographies

Rachel Hilvert O'Malley

Rachel O'Malley, Research Fellow, LEED AP, romalley@umn.edu

Rachel O'Malley is a Research Fellow at the Center for Sustainable Building Research (CSBR) at the University of Minnesota. O'Malley holds a B.A. in Art History from New York University and a Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota. O'Malley has also worked as a Teaching Assistant in the College of Design at the University of Minnesota, and prepared an “Eco-Rehab” Guide for the Arcola Hills Center in Stillwater. Prior to her career in the architectural field, O'Malley taught elementary school in Baltimore, MD with Teach for America.

O'Malley's work at CSBR has varied from onsite building evaluation to exhibit design. She has research experience in guideline system evaluation and comparison, sustainable building metrics development, and building performance benchmarking. O'Malley has contributed written and graphic content for the Minnesota Sustainable Housing Initiative Knowledgebase and was a key developer of its online website. More recently she has managed the pilot phase of the Midwest Green Building Case Study Project, funded by the U.S. Green Building Council and is also managing the research and content development of a Department of Energy-sponsored exhibit on sustainable buildings for the Bell Museum of Natural History.

O'Malley is interested in the junction of environmental and social sustainability in relationship to the built environment. Her particular interests include affordable housing, urban land use issues, and equitable access to green design.
