AIA+SB2030 Training
The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Seattle Chapter, has developed a series of ten, four-hour courses for building designers. These courses are designed to enable those designers to meet energy use targets established by programs like Minnesota Sustainable Building 2030 and Architecture 2030, which currently require new buildings to use 60% less energy than an average building of the same type. AIA Seattle is currently running this series of courses for the third year, having sold out each time.
This grant will enable CSBR and our team of project participants to purchase the program from Seattle AIA, modify it to reflect regional issues, regulations, and case studies, and to present it to 50 building designers for a small fee. It is intended that the program should continue to be run in the future, likely with an increased fee to cover expenses covered by the grant in the current iteration.
The ten courses are:
- Session 1: Setting + achieving energy goals with integrated design
- Session 2: Getting to 60: The power of targets & load reduction
- Session 3: Accentuate the positive—climate responsive design
- Session 4: Skins—the importance of the thermal envelope
- Session 5: Passively-Aggressive—employing passive systems for load reduction
- Session 6: Illuminating savings: daylighting and integrated lighting strategies
- Session 7: Right-sized—equipment and controls for super-efficient building systems
- Session 8: Site power—renewable energy opportunities
- Session 9: The handoff & staying in shape
- Session 10: Achieving 2030 goals on the project and at the office
